China has once again vetoed in Security Council to declare Masood Azhar, the chief of the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terror outfit, a global terrorist and impose sanctions on him. This is not for the first time that Beijing has vetoed the sanctions against Azhar, but to keep its friend Pakistan in good humor, it has done it in the past also.China’s wrong decision has prevented action by the international community to designate the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), a proscribed organisation, which claimed responsibility for the February 14 deadly terror attack in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district. But despite Beijing’s negative role, New Delhi has affirmed that it will continue to pursue all available avenues to ensure that all terrorists involved in heinous attacks on Indian citizens are brought to justice. If New Delhi succeeds in having both Jaish and its chief blacklisted, Pakistan would be branded as a state sponsor of terrorism and isolated on the international stage. This is what India wants to pursue till the end and China is trying to block it. China is pampering Pakistan because it wants to turn China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) into another East India Company. The East India Company was the British trading mission sent to India, which became the precursor to the British colonial presence in the subcontinent, eventually gaining power and overthrowing the Mughals who ruled India at the time. And that day is not far when China under the garb of CPEC will occupy Pakistani territory. The CPEC is very harmful for poor Pakistani people as they have to bear the entire burden. This project will become a national calamity for Pakistan as whatever loans it has taken from China will have to be paid by the poor people of Pakistan. The infrastructure being established in Gwadar would only benefit the Chinese and Punjab governments, not the local community. The people of Balochistan and other provinces in Pakistan will not get any benefit from it, rather they will be burdened. The Gwadar port’s security, which is of special concern to China, imposes a heavy financial burden on Pakistan. Gwadar additionally symbolises the sense of alienation felt by many in Balochistan. The local fishermen have been forced to leave Gwadar, and they have become a minority in their homeland, and that most of the benefits of the CPEC are going to outsiders.China is intent on achieving its strategic ambitions of acquiring Gwadar port and securing a large chunk of Pakistan occupied Kashmir and adjacent areas. And for this it is helping Pakistan for time being to protect terror mastermind like Masood Azhar. However, that day is not far when China too will toe the line of international community to designate Azhar as global terrorist and Pakistan a state sponsoring terrorism.
